Dylan has been gone for a whole 18 hours so far and we're still counting! And because there has been no Dylan, Brendan and I have been able to spend some quality time together. So, this morning, as a special treat, I used some of my River Rock gift cards and took him to the buffet breakfast. He is hilarious! When he came back to the table with his first plate of food, he was almost giddy with happiness! He was talking and eating, and laughing - what a rare occurrence with my 13 year old son! And man can that kid eat! After 3 FULL plates of breakfast (bacon, sausage, eggs benny, pancakes, eggs, potatoes, toast, etc), I thought we were ready to leave, but NOOOOOOOOO, now it was time for cereal and the cold food table. Our server brought so many glasses of milk to our table that I was waiting for him to be cut off. Finally, when I had lost count of the plates of food that had been consumed, we got up to leave, and then we still had to detour past the fruit bar so he could "have something for the road"!
The best part of the morning though was having real conversation with him. We talked about school, friends, music - he thinks maybe a degree in music at a performing arts school might be for him (we had to come back to Grandma's so he could google Julliard). For a kid that can be so surly and seems to hate me more than he likes me, it was a pleasure to spend time with him today. There really is a lot of good buried beneath the hormones! Pheeeewwwwww - there have been times that I've been worried....
