This new eating thing is overwhelming. Dylan and I spent a good amount of time in the natural/organic section at SaveOnFoods (Ironwood), with a very knowledgeable lady, and we still came away with nothing. And she wasn't really very encouraging after it all either. Glutamate is a tricky little thing - the problem is that your body makes the stuff and has the ability to convert seemingly harmless things in to it, so not only are you restricted from the things associated with the glutamate, but also the processes and foods that react to create the glutamate. I feel like going back to school for a bio-chem degree. Tonight I made steak, roast potatoes and corn on the cob and let me tell you, it was a relief to just eat some food without analyzing it! Dinner is probably the easiest thing for us because Dylan likes things plain and we can eat our meat (straight off our cousin's ranch), and vegetables. The hard things are pretty much everything else - baked stuff, dairy products and snacks. Once I get dairy down and find the products (whole fat, once pasteurized), we will be able to do a lot more. After dairy I will tackle flours, sugars and other baking products. We would be set if we grew our own vegetables and fruit, raised chickens and had a cow (that would be a literal cow). Of course, if we raised chickens we'd have to be able to slaughter them - hmmmm, maybe when the freezer is empty of meat we'll just become vegetarians!
An interesting side product of all of this... I have learned that I have very little integrity. I told Dylan that the whole family would change their eating and I would abide by the same eating principles as him. Hahahahaha - all I want to do is cheat! I am WEAK! I ate a Coffee Crisp in the bathroom this morning with the shower running! And the shower wasn't running because I was getting in it... it was running so he didn't hear the wrapper noise! Yet again, I will not win parent of the year.
Alas, tomorrow is another day and I promise to try harder and do better. Of course, there are no more chocolate bars in the house either.

Doing all that research is such a challenge. We've done some changes with our shampoos, soaps, detergents, vegetables and meats when we can based on articles/books we've read. The whole baked food/snacks categories seems overwhelming and harder to makes changes in.
Laughing about the Coffee Crisp... You deserve it - you are a fabulous mom!
Good luck with all the research and changes in your families diet. I don't know anything about glutamate, but I'm so happy that you heard about it from his Dr and I hope all these changes help.
