I'm back.

Wow it's been a long time! It actually took me a couple of tries to log in :) There's so much to catch you all up on and I don't no where to start. Let me hit you with some highlights and we can warm back up to each other...

1. We have another new to us car. As soon as I have a picture I will put one up - in the meantime, google Chrysler New Yorker, 5th Avenue edition. Picture a turquoise limo if you can't be bothered to google it. Yes, we are riding in style and single handedly funding the oil industry. Quite ironic considering our green project from the summer! We are trying to drive VERY little.

2. Both boys have gone back to school! WOO HOO!!! So far so good - I have only had one phone call from a school - that may be a record for us :) Brendan is happy with his classes and teachers, except for one military style teacher that he figures is a direct descendant of Hitler. I think he may be exaggerating.
I am adjusting to the new driving schedule (every second morning he has to be there at 715am) and will be purchasing our first ever bus pass at the end of this month.

3. We have a new house mate (she came in the summer). A young woman who needed a place to stay and we happened to have a place, so it all worked out. The most noticeable difference is that the smells in our house have been distinctly altered. Things smell all fruity and pleasant - it is a nice change, but took some getting used to.

4. I have taken a cleaning job to supplement the self employed income. You can stop laughing anytime. I clean a house once a week for 3-4 hours and make enough money to pay for gas and groceries. Seriously, stop laughing. You do what you gotta do - even me.

5. Brendan has decided he wants to be a vegetarian. We're working on that - he's having a hard time giving up meat. I told him we'll start with vegetarian lunches and 2 dinners a week. I think we can do it, but I'm not so sure about Dylan. We'll see...

6. I have found a little book that sums up all the things I've learned about food and the guidelines I want us to live by. It is called "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan. It is the BEST book I've ever read in regards to food. It is worth buying.

7. Our green project came to a uncerimonial end on September 1, 2010. We are happy with the lessons we learned and many changes we made have become permanent. We're currently working on literless lunches. It's not as easy as you would think when you're also trying to avoid plastics. Suggestions?

Hmmm.... I think that's enough for now. More to come tomorrow...

Welcome back!

I am trying to picture a turquoise-colored limo... somehow fringe and velvet keep coming to mind! Perhaps it would go nicely with the "I'm working the hoe" statement? :)

Litter-less lunches sound like a bit of a challenge. I've heard of washable cloth sandwich bags, but have never used any. I Googled it though, and came up with a ton of hits. Bet they wouldn't be hard to make assuming you have a more friendly relationship with your sewing machine than I have with mine!

When I used to have a "real job" I would bring my lunch (actually dinner) to work in single serving sized ceramic or pyrex containers. They do have plastic lids, but I found them to be wonderful because I could make a bunch of food ahead of time and then freeze it in the single serving containers. Then on my way out the door I'd just grab whatever looked good from the freezer and it was usually defrosted by dinner time. Then I'd just remove the lid and toss it into the microwave. Not sure how that would work at school, but it worked great for me.

Can't wait to read about your continued adventures!
